If you let your clothes line dry in the sun, over time you will notice that it will start to fade. Certain plastics will start to have cracks or streaks. What is happening when they are exposed to the sun?
Hank Green of SciShow (previously) answers a quick question asked by a viewer. He explains that this is due to the sun’s ultraviolet light, and objects with pigments or dyes go through a process called photodegradation. He also explains how to avoid something from being damaged by the sun and how certain plastics or ropes are specially treated to slow down the degradation process.
