Tim Harris, born with down syndrome is the owner of Tim’s Place in Albuquerque, NM, that serves breakfast, lunch and hugs since October 2010. According to CBS News, Harris is probably the only restaurant owner with down syndrome. There’s even a counter to keep track of “Tim Hugs”.
What are “Tim Hugs”?
Harris says, “Calorie Free, Guilt Free. Sweet, but not too sweet. Guaranteed to improve your lease on life!”
The fact that he was born with down syndrome doesn’t stop him. Harris attended Eastern New Mexico University and has certificates in Food Services and Office Skills and has worked in a variety of other restaurant chains such as CiCi’s Pizza, Golden Corral, IHOP, and Peppers Bar and Grill and graduated in 2008. And, he’s a Special Olympics athlete with quite a few gold medals.
As of today, Tim Harris has given 32,475 hugs at Tim’s Place.
“Sometimes customers get sad. I give them a hug and they feel a lot better. Hugs are way more important than food. Food is food.”
