A friend of mine from Germany sometimes sends me local bands and artists who may in fact have a respectable following in Europe, but are still unknown to most folks here in the States. Recently, he sent me a few tunes from HONIG and I was immediately blown away.
Seriously guys, these Krauts have some awesome, melodic songwriting chops. This is honestly some of the best new (to me) music I have heard in a long-ass time. For me, this is one of those situations where I like a band or artist so much, I almost want to dislike them just because I’m envious of their songwriting prowess. How dare they — BASTARDS!
They definitely have a more modern-rootsy/folksy vibe akin to big acts like Mumford and Sons — except not every song sounds exactly the fuckin’ same. I’m just using M&S as a popular comparison so you guys can get an idea — acoustic guitars, banjos, sing-a-longy backing vocals, etc. — but if you’re not a M&S fan (like myself), still definitely give these tunes a spin. You won’t regret it.
Oh, and I also have to mention how goddamn cool the “Lemon Law” video is filmed. I know nothing about that stuff, but it looks like a continuous shot to me, and I would have to assume that the organization and level of choreography that goes into planning and subsequently executing such a task must be incredible.
If you’re viewing this on the homepage, be sure to take the plunge and give “Overboard” a listen as well.
