I have to be honest and state right-off-the-bat that I am not a fan of Macklemore’s tunes. I’ve tried, I swear I have, but it just ain’t happening. To each their own, folks. To each, their own.
Now, I will say that I have heard nothing but amazing things about the dude as a person from those who know, or have even just casually met him. I also have a lot of respect for Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, being indie hip-hop artists that persevered in a game that is horribly unforgiving.
Here, in this candid talk, he recalls addiction and other struggles he has dealt with on his road becoming a legit hip-hop artist and even winning several Grammy awards.
From the TED YouTube channel:
Macklemore aka Ben Haggerty has proud Northwest roots hailing from Seattle, WA. He also has an affinity for The Rose City growing up driving down I-5 to perform and grow his following in Portland, OR. Despite one of the biggest years in pop culture / hip hop history*, Macklemore, graciously joined us to close the “Perfect Day.” Accompanied on stage by TEDxPortland Host & Chief Curator, David Rae, the two explore a discussion on creative craft, independence, rehab / relapse, gay marriage & chasing perfection.
*Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were nominated for seven Grammy awards at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards, winning four awards including Best New Artist, Best Rap Album (The Heist), Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance (“Thrift Shop”). In 2013/14 they toured America and the world performing over 300 shows for millions of fans around the world.
