“The last time… cancels everything”
I hadn’t thought about this band in years until last night. For some reason, while watching Hell on wheels (fantastic show, by the way) the first song off of their debut EP from 1996 popped in my head. I have absolutely no idea why.
But without question, I knew there would be nothing official to play for you guys, so I went on a search to find a fan-made video or a still-shot on YouTube — I came up empty-handed. Such is life.
I suppose I should be that fan that uploads it. Someday, perhaps.
Just like their contemporaries, Sensefield, Farside, Pembroke, Grade, etc., Seven Storey Mountain simply fell off my radar back in the day. I’m not entirely sure why — they were an amazing band, even with all the hate they got for sounding like the Foo Fighters. Which, in all honesty, was a fair comparison. But who fucking cares? So there’s a few more Foo Fighters-esque songs in the world… Who does that hurt?
When their first full-length, Leper Ethics, came out I had just started working at an indie record store and my mind was being blown with new shit on a constant basis from my colleagues. I was in a whole new world of obscure punk, jazz, noise, soul and essentially unknown psych bands from back when. I feel that is a valid excuse for not paying attention to a band I loved when I was 16, right..?
The best attribute this band had was their sense of song structure. I remembered this jam having one of the most epic breakdowns, and I was not left with some sense of nostalgic disappointment after I just listened again — almost 20 years on, at this point. Man, I’m still jealous that I have never came up with a hook so simple, yet catchy as fuck-all.
As I said, I couldn’t find a YouTube link, so click here to get to that joint. And check out some more of their jams while you’re there!
