I was introduced to The Prisoner Of Mars (named after either the Stereolab song or an extremely obscure movie from 1942 of the same name — I’d have to assume the former, but I never inquired) after I had posted a “SOAO Daily Ditty” featuring a now-defunct U.K. garage-punk band called The Mutts.
One of the former members (Bryan Shore) contacted me with some more of The Mutts’s material and we got to talking a bit. I inquired as to what projects he was involved with now and he sent me Tertiary, the record this tune is from (which is available as a free download on Bandcamp).
I wasn’t sure what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised. It’s always great when people send me stuff and it’s actually really good. Surprisingly, at this point, the amount of quality material I get sent far outweighs the shit, but I definitely still do get the shit sometimes — believe me.
In any event, as I mention quite often here on SOAO — and also in real life — I truly hate having to put certain bands or artists into specific genres. With some it’s quite easy, but with a lot of others it’s not and just becomes a trying process to do so.
If I were forced to slap some genres on The Prisoner Of Mars, I suppose I’d go with neo-psych, acid-rock, experimental and maybe even folk with a few tunes, but just give it a spin — either you like it, or you don’t.
His quip on Bandcamp sums up that sentiment rather nicely:
I pull sounds from here, from there – chuck them together and vomit them into the ether. Many duck for cover, others are willingly hit in the face.
This tune is off of 2011’s Tertiary and I embedded the entire record for your listening pleasure, but I chose to put “Do You Have The Time?” as the featured track because that’s the one I happen to be diggin’ the most at the moment.
Show some love for the one-man band and like him on Facebook, follow him on Twitter and as I mentioned earlier, go get this record and check out the rest on Bandcamp. And throw the man a few goddamn shekels if you have the means to do so — the music don’t write itself!
