Although he garnered some mild success and recognition in the mid/late 2000s thanks to the acclaimed 2005 compilation, Gilles Peterson Digs America, William Pulliam — going by the stage name Darondo — was actually a unique, but rather obscure San Francisco-area soul singer from the ’70s. He had a very small, local hit with this song after recording it for the equally obscure record label, Music City, back in 1973.
Some of you Breaking Bad fans may recognize this tune as well, being that it was featured in season 1, episode 4: “Cancer Man.” That’s actually how I came to know of this man’s genius, and I’m damn glad I did. Thanks to his new-found popularity, the 68-year-old seasoned soul man is still playing shows. I have yet to see him live, but I hear great things about both his showmanship and his disposition.
This is amazingly simple, stripped-down soul at its absolute best — a beautiful song and an instant classic upon first spin.
