“Easy Rider” is the first single off of Action Bronson’s latest LP, Mr. Wonderful (out fall 2014), and it is pretty goddamn killer. The video, a play on the ’60s cult movie classic, Easy Rider, is refreshing as well.
I only recently got into this guy’s stuff, but almost everything he puts out is great. Highly recommended for those who enjoy more melodic, instrument-based hip-hop. There’s a lot of organic basslines and guitars going on at points — which I love. It’s kinda like a heavy composite made up of some Wu-Tang Clan, Del tha Funkee Homosapien and even some El-P. Then splash in some simple, Dinosaur Jr.-type underlying riffs for a lil’ taste of fun, and, baby, you got a stew goin’.
Of course he’s got his own thing going on, and I’m sure he can and will draw other comparisons, but that combination — in my mind at least — describes his work pretty well.
Hell, people may find that description ludicrous and that’s fine. I am admittedly no music critic, I just know what I like, and I’m definitely digging Action Bronson. Give it a spin.
I usually include a little bio information from AllMusic with the “Daily Ditty” but their page on him is rather weak and kind of annoyed me to be honest. It just reads more like a review than it does a biography. But if you want a little background, I would be happy to oblige…
Action Bronson, from Flushing, Queens, New York was in the restaurant biz — a chef to be exact — before giving all that up in 2009 to pursue his career in music full-time. He released his debut album, Dr. Lecter, in 2011 and has been hitting the game hard ever since.
