Gabe Polsky’s Red Army is a feature documentary about the most successful dynasty in sports history, the Soviet Union’s hockey team, the Red Army. As some of you guys may already know, I am a huge documentary fan as well as a lover of the greatest game on Earth. Throw in some extremely interesting history about a topic almost no one other than those involved knows about and, baby, you got a stew goin’.
All obvious and terrible Arrested Development references aside, this looks like it’s going to be absolutely fantastic. It appears that Red Army is going to be a limited release, initially hitting theaters on November 14th, 2014, then hopefully expanding in January of 2015.
Filmmaker Gabe Polsky tells an extraordinary human story from the perspective of its captain Slava Fetisov, the friendships, the betrayals, and the personal dramas, which led to his transformation from national hero to political enemy. The film examines how sport mirrors social and cultural movements and parallels the rise and fall of the Red Army team with the Soviet Union. Red Army is an inspiring story about a man who stood up to a powerful system and paved the way for change for generations of Russians.
