The Record Collector is a rather funny — and sadly, almost too accurate — satirical video made by Matt Ingebretson that portrays the attitude of the modern vinyl collector.
I have been collecting vinyl for, oh, about 16 years or so at this point. In that time, I have worked at independent records stores and also sold vinyl on eBay out of a huge warehouse stocked with thousands upon thousands of records. I even worked in the audio recording industry for a few years. Now, with all that stated, I think it’s almost needless to say that I have run into this person on many occasions. Way more than I’d care to admit. It’s one of those stereotypes that just rings true for so many people that are into vinyl. Not all, but a lot.
To be completely honest, I was kind of like this — to a much lesser degree — for a little bit when I was younger, but got over it pretty quickly. I think most of the people I keep company with that collect records are pretty mellow now as well. When it comes down to it, I feel it’s so appealing because of the ritual and process of plopping a record on the platter, having a drink (or 5), and just enjoying and relaxing to some good tunes.
