Tanaka Hisashige was a rather interesting man, to say the very least. He was one of those people who was simply born with an extremely curious mind, and by age 14 he was already a talented artisan and inventor of a loom. Later on in his life, just a few years before he passed away, he established the company that would become known worldwide as Toshiba.
In between those impressive feats, he accomplished many things and traveled throughout Japan showing off his inventions and experimenting with different engineering techniques. In his early 20s, Hisashige was particularly intrigued with hydraulics and automation — that’s when he started producing these mechanized dolls.
The amount of detail and work put into these antique robots is absolutely amazing. They are quite impressive from an engineering standpoint alone, but his commitment to pleasing aesthetics does not go unappreciated either. Unfortunately the video is in Japanese and doesn’t provide subtitles, but they aren’t really needed. You can get the basic idea just by the visuals alone.
