When you think of our fellow brothers and sisters in the armed forces, what comes to mind? Bravery? Patriotism?
And when you think of substance abuse, what comes to mind? Some may think of a teen they know or a friend that’s battling the abuse. But what about our brothers and sisters serving our country? Some military members suffer from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance abuse that can affect their overall health and well being.
According to this infographic, in 2011 the Department of Defense Health Related Behaviors Survey of Active Duty Military Personnel reported alcohol binge drinking is 48.6% in the Marines, 36.1% in the Navy, 31.8% in the Army and 22.9% in the Air Force.
And another shocking fact—in 2004, 140,000 veterans were in U.S. state and federal prisons. The greatest contributing factor? Substance abuse.
