If you hosted a dinner party before, guessing how much food to purchase is hard. You could either have too much food or too little, and not enough beverages — yikes!
The folks at GoodaleMillerTeam drafted up an infographic that has all the bases covered. If you’re serving an appetizer and a main dish, suggestions are six pieces for the appetizer and 1.5 servings for the main course. If you are serving appetizers only and no main course, suggestions are 12 pieces per person.
Side dishes are common at dinner parties, and recommendations are 1.5 cups per guest. For fruits and veggies, two large platters for 25 guests.
Those portions will make sure your dinner guests leave enough room for dessert. Some may prefer just a mint after meals, so be sure to stock at least 1/2 cup of candies for each guest. Don’t forget to warm up those tasty cupcakes and medium-sized cookies so they’re ready to serve after dinner. Suggested servings are 1.5 cupcakes and three cookies person. Moreover, don’t forget the one cup of ice cream for each guest.
Quench your guests thirst throughout the night. For mixed drinks with alcohol, you’ll need about two gallons of tea, lemonade, punch or tea per 25 guest. For non-alcoholic beverages, four gallons is recommended. Alcoholic beverages like wine or beer, serve 1.5 drinks per hour per person.
Using this infographic as a starting point, it should help give you an idea of the food portions you need to get. If your guests have bigger appetites, increase the serving sizes accordingly.
Some suggestions I would make that I didn’t see in the infographic are coffee or tea. If you’re a coffee or tea drinker, ensure your supplies are well-stocked as almost always one of your guests will want a cup of tea or coffee. For the complete infographic, you can view it below:
