If you’re a fan of Morrissey or The Smiths, you may have your own interpretation of each song. And some may even state that all the lyrics are depressing.
Brian Keda is a passionate fan that disagrees and created this gorgeous infographic that groups the songs into various themes such as Love, Unfulfillment, Anger, The Self and many more.
Some of these themes have sub-themes associated with it. For example, the song, “I Won’t Share You” is filed under ‘Selfishness’, a sub-theme of The Self. The song is also connected to ‘Obsession’, the sub-theme of Love.
The categorization of the songs are subjective and Brian’s own interpretation. While you may disagree with his interpretation, his goal was to lay out and explore the lyrical theme and connection of each song.
I always bristle when someone describes the lyrics of Morrissey as merely “depressing.” And yet, if you are a long time fan, you have noticed a definite similarity in the subjects and people of his verse: the unrequited love, the criminals, the self-loathing, the longing for something…else. This infographic is my personal (and subjective) attempt to identify those themes, find the connections within songs and uncover the most popular topics (hint, Disdain and Misfit characters top the charts.)
