In this fascinating documentary by Matthew Ballard, we meet Iijima Hiroki, who has been playing with the kendama for twelve years and mixes it with dance. His ultimate goal is to change the culture how kendama is viewed and the image of it in Japan. As Iji describes, it’s currently viewed as a “modest toy” and traditionally is played in a very “motionless” manner, unlike other kendama players, there’s more excitement in the way it’s played.
