Smarter Every Day’s (previously) latest video is an interesting watch for anyone that has, or is interested in tattoos and tattooing. I, myself, have a few large pieces and never really knew how the machines and the artists that use them operate. I have a couple friends who are tattoo artists that I suppose I could have asked over the years, but I never actually realized that I was interested in the process until now.
Edit: I actually just saw that he posted this on reddit himself a little while ago, and is over there answering questions and giving a little more insight into the process of tattooing and the individuals involved in the video — head on over and say hello.
Here’s a sample:
I was pretty surprised to see that the needles actually pulled the skin UP when they pulled out.
Also, I really found it’s interesting how the different tattoo machines work. If you think about it, wouldn’t the Rotary machine make the needle PIVOT when it’s in the skin?
Another cool thing about this is that I destroyed several of my stereotypes. Many people think that tattoo artists are rough people. I found these people to be quite professional. Leah reads a lot and we discussed philosophy in between shots. I also went to a tattoo parlor in Florida to shoot the close up shot of the needles. Those guys were also super professional and kind to me and my mother while we were in there.
