Whether you loved or hated The Matrix, each movie always has fascinating behind the scenes facts. In this episode by AlltimeMovies (previously), they’ve jam-packed it with various details from casting, budget, salaries, and more.
With a tight budget of only a $16 million dollars, The Matrix had to be filmed in Australia. If it were filmed in the U.S., it would have cost $180 million dollars.
Before Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Laurence Fishburne were cast, other actors turned down the film. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson turned down the film along with Nicholas Cage, Will Smith, Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Val Kilmer, and Ewan McGregor.
For the sequels, the visual effects cost over $100 million dollars. Of course, Warner Bros. studio wasn’t happy with the splurging that Keanu Reeves gave up a part of his salary to help the finish making the film.
