For those of you unfamiliar with this controversial series from the brilliant mind of Aaron Mcgruder, take heed.
The Boondocks is by far one of the greatest shows ever created. I just mentioned how it is controversial, and it is deservedly so. They have pushed the envelope of racial stereotypes all while under the guise of humor. They bust out the “N” word with the enthusiasm of an Olympic athlete trying to break a record. The stereotypical imagery used is also just as offensive to most. For every backwards commonplace black character, there is a backwards commonplace white character.
So why do I say that this is one of the greatest shows of all time? Because of the reasons I just mentioned. People are offended, ignorantly deem it hurtful, and I think that is fucking great! That is what we need. Because it gets people to talk.
Race is STILL such a touchy subject in this country — everywhere actually — and it needs to stop. But it will not. It never made sense and never will make sense, yet sadly, it will never go away. Never. But we can improve.
Some of the most “anti-racist” people I know are, in actuality, extremely racist, but they don’t even know it. They delude themselves in to believing something that doesn’t really exist in their own mind. I can not even count the times I have heard people who consider themselves “non-racist” say “Chink” or “Nigger” or “Spic” or “Wop” out of sheer anger, purposefully using the word in the most hurtful and hateful way as possible.
With his attempt to tackle ignorance in all corridors regarding race, Mcgruder has been a pioneer for a new generation. For people who just don’t give a shit anymore. Good people is good people. That is all that matters.
He’s been telling that on the mountain for years, and has gained a follower and the admiration of my white-cracker-ass from day one.
Good luck Aaron!
