Data visualization can sometimes produce beautiful results. Nathan Yau at FlowingData has taken public running data and mapped the routes people ran.
Ever since I saw Nikita Barsukov map running traces in a handful of European cities, I wondered what the paths looked like for others. A lot of people make their workouts public on a variety of services, so there’s definitely accessible data. I use RunKeeper for cycling. I sampled from there.
The majority of the map data are of American cities, but he has a few European ones as well. Here are a few images of Yau’s work. Click for a larger version.
